Hej all, time to introduce you all with the band i love the most.
Sirenia, Morten Velands child after leaving Tristania back in december 2000.
The reason i'm so attracted to them is #1 the amazing lyrics, its extremely dark but the lyrics always seem to surround the I-factor.
Its not built in an ego like way, but i can relate to it like i have related with no other band.
Another factor what i like in Sirenia is the incredible use of voices, for me a voice is subjected to what its singing and how.
But Sirenia seems to bring it to a whole different level, you probably wouldn't even notice how ingenious the voices are but if you listen you'll find choirs, clean male, clean female, screams, grunts and all sorts of weird combinations.
Sirenia incorporates a lot of metal styles including the ones in the title aswell as some doom elements.
Since 2001 they have released a number of albums which i'll post below.
(i'll post opinions beneath each album, do remember that these are opinions since i can be a little overwhelming when it comes to this band
)
2001 - At sixes and sevensThis is my absolute favorite album of all time, a lot of choir use and it feels disturbingly serene as it is raw emotion in a plastic cover.
Tracklist01. Meridian
02. Sister Nightfall
03. On the Wane
04. In a Manica
05. At Sixes and Sevens <- just so you know, this is my absolute favorite song
06. Lethargica
07. Manic Aeon
08. A Shadow of Your Own Self
09. In Sumerian Haze 2003 - An Elixir For ExistenceTheir 2nd best album, you can hear the start of their change a little bit, but Morten Veland still stands on the foreground and tells a clear story.
Also the first album which incorporated instrumental songs.
Tracklist01. Lithium and a Lover
02. Voices Within
03. A Mental Symphony
04. Euphoria
05. In My Darkest Hours
06. Save Me From Myself
07. The Fall Within
08. Star-Crossed <--
this is the amazing song on an album of extremely good09. Seven Sirens and a Silver Tear
2004 - Sirenian Shores (Mini CD) This isn't a full album but a short one with only a couple of new songs.
The song Sirenian Shores is an awesome tale that tells the story of the sirens.
There is ofcourse a siren (female voice) and the sailor (male grunting).
This would be the last awesome thing they'd produce (again, in my opinion).
Tracklist01. Sirenian Shores
02. Save Me From Myself (remix)
03. Meridian (Acoustic)
04. First We Take Manhattan
05. Obire Mortem
Nine Destinies and a Downfall Yes... erhm....... so.... info?
If every bone in my body could break by hearing music, they would be shattered at the moment.
Don't get me wrong, it isn't really bad or anything... but with this album it felt like they sold out so much it just hurt.
I stopped listening to Sirenia after hearing this album for at least 2/3 years.
All the focus seems to be on the female vocals and since the original strength of Sirenia lies with the strong lyrics and the persuasion they give with the different sets of vocals into one, this album removes itself from all previous albums.
This made them into the 1 of a million kinda band with almost zero grunting and just female vocals, they might just as well have been a local band which i would have given little attention.
Tracklist01. The Last Call
02. My Mind's Eye
03. One by One
04. Sundown
05. Absent without Leave
06. The Other Side
07. Seven Keys and Nine Doors
08. Downfall
09. Glades of Summer
The 13th floorThis album seems to be a bit better, or at least the riffs are better but the focus on female vocals seems to be continued and thats quite a shame since Morten really has a great voice.
The things that are sung doesn't really have any meaning since Morten wrote them and since Ailyn are singing them, it still doesn't have the kind of persuasion as Morten has.
It is still better then the previous album though.
Tracklist01. The Path to Decay
02. Lost in Life
03. The Mind Maelstrom
04. The Seventh Summer
05. Beyond Life’s Scenery
06. The Lucid Door
07. Led Astray
08. Winterborn 77 <-
the intro is nice, but once the female singing starts to kick in........ you'll know what i mean 09. Sirens of the Seven Seas
And there is another album on its way called "The Enigma of Life" so i'm curious how thats gonna be.
It seems that the old concept of Sirenia is gone and now lives on in Mortemia although that still isn't the old Sirenia.
Here are a couple of songs from the Old Sirenia that i really love, at least
At sixes and sevens with the lyrics.
Hopefully you'll be able to listen the entire song along with the lyrics and can hear what i can hear.
Try and read the lyrics along with the voices and perhaps you'll get a grasp of why i love old Sirenia as much.
Check for lyrics below the youtube video in the upcoming 3 videos.
I wish i could post all songs from them which I find amazing.
The person which has been patient enough to actually listen all 3 songs, i'll post below this one, might have noticed a difference in the female vocals and thats right.
The #1 problem Sirenia seems to have is with female vocals, until now they had a different female vocalist for each album (not including the mini CD) cause they went their own ways cause of "personal interests".
Anyway, if you have read this far i'm really amazed and i'd like to thank you, no point in calling it your favorite band and only saying 1 line about them is there ;-)
Hope you had fun and could talk loads more about Sirenia but i'll spare you guys that
Let me know what you think, as this really is my fav. band so i don't say stuff about it lightly!
